NSA Building Super Data Storage Centers to Keep Track of the American People

After the attacks on 9/11, the United States government started keeping track of Americans phone call and internet habits. (This was reported in the New York Times back in April.)

It now appears the the National Security Agency, that is charged with monitoring these activities, is building a new type of super-center to store this data indefinitely:

The National Security Agency is building huge new storage facilities to store the unconstitutionally gained data on the American people's telephone calls and Internet traffic permanently, including new buildings in suburban Salt Lake City, Utah, and San Antonio, Texas.

The NSA has been keeping permanent records of all American's telephone call habits and Internet traffic since shortly after September 11, 2001, according to major news reports, without the constitutionally required warrants from a court.
This is all being allowed under the Patriot Act that was passed in the dark of night under the guise of protecting the American people from "terrorists." Our liberties are at stake with government programs like this and the activities of said government.

It is time to spark a revolution of ideas to roll back the infringement on our freedom's and take back the god given rights that are bestowed upon free people.

  4. This is hysteria. Be very cautious about believing any "major news media" story concerning an agency such as NSA.

The idea that Uncle Sam has been collecting and processing the phone calls and internet traffic of all American citizens has been around for 25 years. People said this in Reagan's time, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II and now. It's absolutely silly and absurd for these reasons:

    1. NOBODY has the priorities, capability, manpower or budget to collect a pool of data that large.
    2. The Signals Intelligence business does not work that way; you don't just willy-nilly collect mountains and mountains of information with no mission or target. Hollywood has it this way, but that's just not reality.
    3. Perishability and relevance are nearly impossible with a pile of stuff that huge.

What IS plausible, however, is this. As law enforcement and military authorities determine a specific domestic terrorism scenario is unfolding, they will focus intelligence gathering efforts against that.

The system you're getting so worried about is probably devoted to targeting, collecting and processing activities of a 9-11 style organization, which is planning to murder you next week as you ride an elevator or take a plane. An example was last week.

A radical Sunni Imam in Detriot was eliminated in a gun battle with U.S. authorities. I'm quite glad it worked out like it did. You should be, too. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that his activities were intercepted, collected, processed and acted upon.

It's widely admitted that the Patriot Act was and is an extreme measure. No disagreement there. But so was a Boeing 767 with full fuel and passengers plunging into a 100-story office building on a Tuesday morning.

So relax. It's not 1984. Just cool off and think.

    I used to work there.
