Problems on UC Campuses

Recently, I have written about disruptions and arrests occurring on University of California campuses at Berkeley and Irvine, incidents that have brought embarrassment to the respective schools. Unfortunately, two other campuses have been hit by embarrassing incidents in the past few days.

A few days ago, a Jewish student discovered a swastika carved into her dormitory door at UC Davis. The girl says she gets along well with all her dorm mates and is at a loss as to who did it.

At UC San Diego, a group of fraternities organized a so-called "Compton Cookout", meant as a spoof of Black History Month. Attendees were invited via Facebook to dress up and act like stereotypes of inner-city blacks. Black students at UCSD were not amused.

Below is a link to the invitation, the reaction of Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and a letter from a campus fraternity regarding the incident (San Diego Channel 10 News):

Then, a few days ago, a noose was found hanging on a book shelf in the campus library. Just in the past day, a female student came forward and admitted to the act. She has been suspended. At this point, her name (and race) has not been reported. These incidents have led to rallies in support of black students and a protest at the chancellor's office. Given the already-simmering controversy of the cookout, the noose must be assumed to have been hung as a racial statement. Given the past history of lynchings in the South, the noose has a definite racial connotation. It is highly troubling that this would occur on a university campus-or anywhere else, for that matter.

UCSD does not have a high black enrollment, and now the university is facing demands that they increase their number of black students and faculty, as well as set up a resource center for black students.

Yesterday, Governor Schwarzenegger spoke of the racially-tinged incidents and said that they will not be tolerated. It is not clear what action will be taken by the university against the organizers of the "Compton Cookout" since it occurred off-campus. However, if their rules of conduct are the same as UCI's, there should be a provision for off-campus incidents. It would also seem that action could be taken against the fraternities if they were indeed acting as sponsors.

I think it is high time for UC President Yudoff to step in and exercise some firm leadership if you get my drift. Forget the "sensitivity" sessions and the holding-hands rallies. That's always the response, and they do no good. They also tend to deteriorate into demagoguery of all the other issues in the world. The students at UCSD have shown their support of their black classmates, and that is good. If the university makes an example of the haters and troublemakers on campus by getting rid of them, everybody else will get the message. Then the nooses and the swastikas will stop.

  1. Why not just put a chip in everyone's head and monitor what their thinking? While you worry about symbolism the socialists and communists in our universities really are taking over the government. But hey its ok as long as everyone keeps holding hands and massaging the politically correct line, everything will be fine, really.

  2. (1) UCSD: A group of dumb white frat guys hold an event called a "Compton Cookout." This pisses people off as it used Black History Month as a reason to mock black people with racist stereotypes. Also involved is some idiot who tries to use this opportunity for shameless self-promotion, who also happens to be black. To say the least, the guy is basically a wannabe Flavor Flav.

    (2) UCSD: Another dumb white frat guy gets mad that blacks are offended of being relegated to a bigoted stereotype. He tries to hold another racist event.

    (3) UCSD: Meanwhile, a terrible student media publication (which, after viewing their website consists of all white staff, nudity, staff wrestling each other, and well, not much else), pushes their limits calling black students "ungrateful n------" - not just that word, but also that apparently the black students owed them something. They have a reputation of being trashy, and at this point, administration and faculty rush to condemn racism by students of the campus and various protests begin. Funding is also cut from all student media at UCSD, creating an extra bitter controversy.

    (4) UCSD: On Friday of that week, a noose is found in the library. Everything gets worked in a frenzy and - something I'll address later - a large amount of white commenter’s on the internet begin claiming that is was probably a black student who planted it in order to gain more sympathy. In addition, there are rumors of a threatening note sent to the Guardian and a second noose, there was no second noose, and the threat seems to be just a rumor.

    (6) UCSD: Protests basically happen at all schools in support of the students. There are various sit-ins, and teach-ins, and what have you. School administrators become pushed to be more active in fixing what’s going on.

I have not seen this noose person, but most of you blame her and conveniently forget wear this all originated.

Instead of an apology there has been steady escalation and now the noose. So, what exactly will the excuses be for this cowardly act that brings up memories of the confederate KKK of the South in their attempts to keep slavery and the non-whites in fear? Is it that are uneducated, is it that their parents planted these seeds of hate, is it that they are live in fear because our President in the white house is not 100% white. In my opinion this is what the republican party of “birthers, baggers and blowhards” have brought you. These kids follow what their dullard leaders say, they listen to Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush and Savage and the rest of the Blowhards, they are young and dumb. Are you surprise at what they do when you know what they think?

  3. Wow, Montana. You really are a moron, aren't you? Any honest, thinking human being knows that Rush and the rest aren't the sum total of the Republican Party. Oh ... and I'm certain which I find more funny: that you are accusing college students of not being able to think or act rationally or that you apparently can't think or act rationally!

  4. Jay: "think or act rationally" They know how to follow the leader, not funny. But what was funny is when they all came unglued when Beck called the Birthers crazy. Thats good stuff. Deal with that baby!

  5. Montana,

Contrary to what you may believe, most all conservatives do not believe Obama was born anywhere other than in Hawaii.
